Physical Activities at The Marian Centre
![]() |
|
Stuart Keith |
- Physical activity interventions are a critical component of a broad approach in recovery-oriented mental health services.
- The Marian Centre recognised the importance of regular physical activities in mental health.
- The Centre incorporates physical activities program in its therapy process for suitable patients. The program also provides specific promotion of a more physically active lifestyle, encourages self-monitoring of the levels of participation in physical activities, and suggests strategies of preventing any relapses of emotional problems and maintaining the quality of life and well being.
- The program is strongly evidence-based. Research clearly identifies that the effects of physical activity are similar to those of psychotherapeutic interventions. Exercise can alleviate secondary symptoms such as low self-esteem and social withdrawal. The research also suggests that exercise is well accepted by distressed patients and is often considered to be one of the most valuable components of the treatment.
- The program is delivered in collaboration with the local physiotherapy centre providing appropriate facilities and equipment, incorporating light hand weights and fitness benches and balls in a circuit format.
- For more details regarding this program, please contact the Program Coordinator – Mr Stuart Keith.
