Referral Pathways for General Practitioners

We are pleased to introduce a new comprehensive private psychiatric service that provides:

Our Aims and Mission

Our mission is to enable our colleagues and patients to provide compassionate, evidence-based, integrated and comprehensive service for patients, families and carers.

Advantages

  1. Greater Choice - The new service will offer greater choice to referrers, patients and carers in Western Australia.
  2. Ongoing Support - We are optimistic in our approach and help patients recover fully. We will offer your patients ongoing support.
  3. Quality - The Marian Centre has full certification from the Australian Council of Healthcare Services (ACHS) and is a member of the Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA).
  4. Teamwork Approach - Restoring health and confidence is best done as a team effort. We will offer specialist services to help the family and other, and the General Practitioner.
  5. Coordinated Management - We use a biological, spiritual, psychological and social approach to address patient needs. We offer a wide range of treatment options.
  6. Evidence and Research - Our treatments are evidence-based and reflect the best that are available. We have a vigorous continuous Quality program to ensure that our standards remain high.
  7. Education - Knowledge should be shared. Education about illness can give a sense of control to patients and families. We are involved in the training of medical students from Notre Dame University.

Access and Availability

We have initiatives for General Practitioners and Specialists to give high quality service for their patients.

  1. On-call referral and advice: We have a 24 hour seven day a week on-call service. This allows access to an experienced team of Consultant Psychiatrists.
  2. Assessment and management plan: We provide assessments, management and admissions. We will also assist with mental health care plans. Please see our attached chart of referral options and the related Medicare item numbers.
  3. Outpatient assessment and management: We have a number of practitioners based at 15 and 24 Colin Street, West Perth.
  4. Therapy groups: There is a range of inpatient groups for patients. Referral to these groups is via an accredited psychiatrist.

Locations

  • Hospital - The hospital is located at 187 Cambridge St, Wembley. The hospital was fully refurbished in 2006.
  • Consulting Rooms - The consulting rooms are at 15 and 24 Colin Street, West Perth. These are centrally located rooms which accommodate a wide variety of practitioners.

Diagnoses

Patients with mental health issues may present in a complex fashion. Our Psychiatrists would be more than happy to provide an opinion regarding diagnosis.

Treatments

  • Pharmacological and Physical Therapies - Not all patients respond well to initial medications. Some only partially respond to treatment and continue to have symptoms. Our Consultant Psychiatrists are happy to provide opinions and assistance.
  • Psychological Therapies - We offer a full range of treatment options to meet the needs of patients with mental health problems.
  • Specialist Psychological Treatment Program - Patients can be referred for the following Specialist Psychological Treatment Programs. They will need to be under the care of a Consultant Psychiatrist.
    1. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Program
    2. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy Program
    3. Adolescent Therapy Program
    4. Intensive Community Treatment Program

Costs and Accounts

The Marian Centre has successfully negotiated agreement with the major Western Australian Health funds being HBF and Medibank Private. Your patients will have access to all the services of preferred provider facilities. We are currently negotiating agreements with further funds and have implemented strategies to minimize out-of-pocket costs to those patients. Your patients will require an estimate of fees from the hospital prior to their admission.

All patients should be encouraged to contact their Private Health Fund to confirm their coverage.
