Privacy Act

  • In order for carers and supporters to be involved in patient management we need to get permission from the patient involved.
  • To do this, we will be asking patients to fill out consent forms.
  • In some cases, a patient has a large support network. In these cases we will ask that a nominated contact person be provided to give information to other carers.

Orientation to the Centre

  • If you wish to be involved, we encourage you to be present when the patient first arrives at the centre.
  • You will then be able to participate in centre orientation.

Your Involvement in Treatment

  • This will depend on the wishes of the patient.
  • We consider it essential that the patient feels that they are not recovering alone.

Assessment/Treatment Plan

  • After the patient arrives at the Centre they will be fully assessed by our staff.
  • Following this, a treatment and management plan will be devised.
  • If you wish you can request that the treating specialist and nursing staff discuss this.

Treatment Options

  • There are a wide variety of treatment options for each disorder.
  • These will be discussed with the patient to allow each individual to make an informed decision about various treatments.
  • Carers and supporters may be involved in this decision making process.

Group Therapies

  • Group treatment is a mainstay of modern mental health treatment.
  • Carers and supporters would not normally attend sessions, to preserve the confidentiality of participants.
  • In the event that you do wish to learn more about the programmes, please consult the information on the Web site.

Carer and Supporters Groups

  • The Centre will run groups to provide information about various disorders.
  • Please contact the Centre's reception for times and locations.
  • In addition, there are a number of self-help information sessions conducted off-site.

Informed Consent

  • The centre is a private voluntary unit.
  • In order to receive any treatment the patient is expected to provide Informed Consent.
  • We believe that this is a critical and empowering component of treatment.
  • The main components are:
    • Information to make an informed choice.
    • Lack of coercion or pressure to choose a particular course of action.
    • Capacity to make informed decisions.

Length of Stay

  • The time a patient will be in hospital will very much depend on the severity, type and nature of the illness.
  • We will often encourage patients to return to their carers and supporters to make sure there is no loss of these links. In this way, the carers and supporters become an important part of the patient's management.

Visiting Hours

  • There are designated visiting hours for the unit.
  • These have been established to allow the patient to make the best use of the available treatments and management programs.
  • When visiting a patient please use the sign-in in book located at reception.
  • This will allow our staff to implement correct emergency procedures (e.g. for fire), if necessary.
  • It is expected that most visitors will leave the centre by 9pm.
  • This is so night staff can allow the patients to organise themselves for sleep.

Boarders

  • We do not generally encourage boarders to stay at the Centre.
  • This is to allow the patient to get sufficient rest and participate in the full range of treatments.

Amenities

  • The Centre has been specially designed to cater for carers and supporters.
  • A large number of private and secluded sitting areas are available for use during visits.
  • Carers may enjoy a meal with outpatients. Our main priority is outpatients and they will be served meals first. If you wish to use this service please inform catering staff to arrange your meal purchase.
